Real Life Self-Organizing Teams
Hypothesis (Can we all agree on this?)
• Autonomous teams doing thought-based work outperform teams that primarily depend on direction from organizational leadership
• This autonomy is created in an agile way via empowering our people to organize in to relatively small self-organizing teams
• Finally, our ability to do this successfully is a leading enabler of overall agile transformation success

If you agree – please attend and let’s talk about how the challenges and the subtle balance of how to actually build a self-organizing team environment.

What Can Agilists Learn from Super Hero Movies
Is your Agile team struggling to vanquish the nemeses that are holding them back? Come take a page out of some of your favorite DC and Marvel super hero movies for tips on how to move your team forward.

In this session, we’ll examine a range of beginner topics applicable to Scrum Masters, Product Owners, Coaches, management, or anyone who interacts with a team. Among other topics, we’ll examine how various comic book heroes have dealt with difficult prioritization choices that villains have presented them with, and give models that your team can use for effective prioritization.  We’ll talk about The Fool’s Choice and how a hero was able to improve his communication skills.  We’ll watch a scene from the new Wonder Woman movie and learn important lessons for Agile teams as we witness her dealing with a German invasion.  And most importantly, we’ll examine when we shouldn’t try to emulate our favorite comic book heroes.

This Is The Generative Culture You Are Looking For…
WE ARE ALL LOOKING FOR THE BEST OF DEVOPS
As a DevOps Coach, I have had the privilege of working with many organizations in the world who are focused on improving their organizations. They range in industry from military, government and financial institutions to retail and staffing. From highly regulated and high risk environments to those that seem to always be on the cutting edge of technology and culture.
I'm here to say that DevOps Awesomeness is not just for the big 4 (Amazon, Apple, Google, and Netflix)!
There are people, teams and organizations in the audience who have built their own cultures that will enable Awesomeness in 2018. These cultures are generative in nature, this means that the cultures are built upon the notion that people are people and not resources, that we should trust our team mates and people, that we should foster innovation by having a culture of experimentation that doesn't punish failure and learns quickly from it.

Come join us for a fun and entirely “hands on” session where you will decompose and build the SAFe “big picture” one layer at a time. Attendees will learn about the roles, responsibilities, artifacts, structures, interconnections, and flow of value within each of the four layers of SAFe: team, program, large solution, and portfolio.

The Ugly Truth of Scaling Agile
Congratulations. 100% of your developers are now practicing Agile. You have a stable, predictable velocity and even your CEO knows what a Scrum is. You’ve scaled, right? Wrong. The ugly truth about scaling Agile is that no matter how many individual teams practice Agile in their own unique ways, scaling “wide” without scaling “up” means that your organization as a whole still lacks the transparency, alignment, and collaboration necessary to gain the benefits of Agile at Scale from Lean Portfolio Management.

Join this interactive session on the ugly truth about scaling Agile to the enterprise. Learn the five truths every executive should be aware of before embarking on their Agile transformation journey.

SMART Objectives:
M – How to define success up front
A – Define milestones/objectives
R – Proven cross-industry fundamentals

Takeaways:
  • Key decisions to being your transformation
  • How to align waterfall with agile
  • How to identify key value drivers for transformation

Getting Big Benefits from Little Groups
Rarely can a corporation hire enough full time coaches to execute and sustain a large agile transformation. Somehow we have to figure out how to be more effective with the people we have. Believe it or not there's a way to get more done while interacting with FEWER people. Starting a Community of Practice can be hard and maintaining the momentum can be even harder. As a result many people put this mission-critical part of their transformation on hold. This session will help you scale your effectiveness not only sustaining but deepening your agile transformation's impact.

Agile Transformation Explained
Many organizations are struggling to apply the concepts of Agile because they view Agile as a new way of doing the same old thing. They believe that if the roles, ceremonies, and artifacts of Scrum are in place, they’ll reap the benefits of having become Agile. However, in our experience, leading a large-scale Agile Transformation isn’t about simply adopting a new set of attitudes, processes, and behaviors at the team level—it’s about building enabling structures, aligning the flow of work, and measuring for outcomes-based progress. It’s about breaking dependencies in an effort to achieve true business Agility. But, in order to achieve business Agility, Agile has to be applied in a certain context. You have to be able to form the right kinds of teams, build the right kinds of backlogs, and produce working, tested increments of product. The problem is that this context doesn’t exist in most companies. Sure, we’ve seen organizations that can implement an Agile way of working on small, self-contained projects. However, when it comes to scaling Agile, most companies fall short because they lack the proper buy-in from leadership, they lack the ecosystem in which Agile can be successful, and they don’t know how to orchestrate the type of change that’s required of organizations that are adopting Agile. What’s needed is a plan. A plan to do more than simply teach people Agile. You’re going to need to find a way to systematically overcome the structural, procedural, and cultural barriers that get in the way of Transformation. The good news is that the plan is knowable, and we want to prove it to you. This talk will explain what a structured, disciplined Agile Transformation looks like and will cover:
• Why organizations want to Transform
• What actually needs to be Transformed
• How the change will be orchestrated
• Who should be orchestrating the change

Planning… Lost in Agile
While the Agile Manifesto and its principles guide us to deliver software in small increments and be accepting of change, it does not say “stop planning ahead”. Many teams continue to only focus on the next sprint without a clear understanding of how the work will impact the longer term vision of the product. Many teams also do nothing to help product managers and management plan ahead. This session will focus on how teams can do better long-term planning without sacrificing the core agile principles, and by doing so, deliver higher value and have fun doing it.

Vertical Story Slicing
If any of these statements resonate with you, join this presentation and interactive workshop on story slicing.
  • “This story is too big to fit into a single sprint. Let’s complete development in this sprint and create a separate story to test in next sprint.”
  • “We don’t have a set sprint cadence. Sometimes it’s 2 weeks, sometimes it’s 3 or 4 weeks depending on the size of the stories we have.”
  • “We didn’t meet our sprint commitment (again). We need to carryover these stories to next sprint.”
  • “I can’t complete story A because it’s dependent on functionality in story B to be finished.”
  • “The Acceptance Criteria in Story A looks like the Acceptance Criteria in Story B! What’s the difference?”
  • “I can’t write requirements for this story. It’s too technical.”
  • “I can’t prioritize these stories. They are all equally important.”
During this session we will:
  • Discuss the characteristics of a well-formed story
  • Explore nine common patterns for effective story slicing
  • Learn to identify clues for when/how to slice stories
  • Practice and test our knowledge of story slicing techniques

Agile in Legacy Apps - Mission Impossible?
How many times did you hear: legacy systems are not a good fit for Agile transformation? Have you ever said it yourself? I want to tell you a story of a digital transformation in Premier to prove you wrong. Agile is not only a great fit for the legacy applications, it an absolute business necessity, because how else can you provide incremental value for hundreds or thousands of users through a flexible adjustable roadmap?

My story is not going to be about an immediate success. We've had our fair share of problems, challenges, and small failures. "Legacy" means "old". It means - outdated technology stack, messy dependencies, code that nobody understands, manual testing, manual builds, manual deployments, redundant features. Also, customer issues, bugs, performance issues, scalabiity concerns. Wait, did I mention dependencies?

Come to the session if any of this sounds familiar, if you're afraid of starting the Agile transformation, or if your company already went through a number of initiatives but the old habits die hard. I will share the valuable lessons we've learned from our experience, the strategies to apply to make the changes stick, as well as the anti-patterns to watch for.

The First Five Stories
Whether starting a new greenfield product or blowing the dust off an old legacy app, in order to maximize delivered value, you need to be mindful of the first set of stories to deliver.
Together, we will discuss the power of critical technical stories to help you iterate faster, earlier. How do you know your ideas for your new software experience is really delivering value? How do you handle a botched deployment to your customers early in your development? What allows you to fail safely and recover, even in compliance-driven conditions? These questions and more will be addressed as we explore ways to shorten the cycle time of building software, gathering metrics, and incorporating our findings into newly delivered capabilities.
Finally, we'll review how new findings, from recently delivered stories, drive further refinements to Lean Canvas assumptions, invalidate or affirm hypotheses, and provide a catalyst to Lean UX and 'learning loops'.

Succeeding with DevOps- The Culture of Code
Becoming a DevOps shop isn’t just about hiring DevOps engineers and implementing a new toolset; it’s about changing the culture of your organization. Agile brought a culture of communication and collaboration to the core development team. Your focus on DevOps should be to stretch that same culture shift throughout the organization up to the product team and down to product delivery. Focusing on the culture shift of DevOps creates faster innovation. With well integrated teams and tools, value can be created faster, delivered in a predictable, repeatable way, and feedback returned to key stake holders quickly. And all of this enables transparency in this process for those who have not had visibility in the past and enforces transparency for those who have worked behind the curtain of complexity that has obscured the view in the past. This transparency solves the traditional perception that 80% of software projects fail enabling quicker evaluation of new features and a faster feedback cycle to product owners and key stakeholders.

Project to Product: How Value Stream Networks Will Transform IT and Business
Project to Product: How Value Stream Networks Will Transform IT and Business

Agile and DevOps transformations have been key for speeding up software development, yet at large organizations these transformations are often declared failures with limited ROI. Development work is still disconnected from the business needs and teams are struggling to accommodate decades old software architectures; resulting in substantial technical debt.

Projects, organization charts, and enterprise architecture are the best representations of value creation we have today. But they are failing us, and we know it. To survive digital disruption, enterprises need a new approach for connecting the business to the software delivery pipeline.

During this talk, Carmen DeArdo will provide specific examples of why organizations have failed, and present a new concept - The Flow Framework - that allows IT leaders to optimize value creation across the entire organization utilizing product centric value stream networks.

The Agile Forecast: Fun with Probabilities
One question that I have always asked myself and have had stakeholders ask on many occasions is "when can we release this?". Through the magic of story points and velocity, my teams cobbled together approximate dates with a wide variance on confidence.
When the opportunity arose to leverage different methodologies to help the team meet a fixed delivery date, I started to investigate methods to forecast delivery without the traditional point based velocity of scrum. I was looking for something more accurate to give me, my team, and leadership a way to forecast the future with a greater degree of certainty.
I leveraged a statistical forecasting method that built a Kernel Density Estimate distribution function from historical data in JIRA. This data is now used to forecast our delivery dates as well as track our delivery progress on a daily basis.
My talk will cover the background into the methodology, how to use it and when to use it, along with the ups and downs of getting people on board to this process during its maturation.
